Gutter care is not complicated, but it needs to be consistent. Flush the gutter and test every downspout

Once the visible debris is gone, use a garden hose to flush the gutter. Start at the end farthest from the downspout and work toward the outlet. The water should move steadily without pooling or flowing over the outer edge.

Watch where the downspout discharges. Water should exit freely and be directed well away from the foundation. If the downspout is slow or blocked, try flushing it from the top. For a stubborn clog, disconnect the lower elbow if accessible and rinse the section from the ground. Do not force a rigid tool through a downspout, which can damage seams or cause sections to separate.

A downspout extension or properly positioned drain connection can make a meaningful difference where water tends to collect beside the home. The goal is simple: keep roof runoff moving away from the foundation, not toward it.

Check fasteners, seams, and slope

After flushing, look again for leaks. Small drips at a seam may respond to cleaning and resealing with a gutter sealant suited to the gutter material. Loose hangers and brackets should be tightened or replaced promptly, because a sagging gutter holds water and becomes heavier with every storm.

Gutters should slope gradually toward the downspout. A perfectly level gutter can hold water, while a gutter with excessive slope can look uneven and may allow water to rush past an outlet during intense rain. Correcting slope often involves adjusting hangers and should be handled carefully to avoid damaging the fascia board.

If you see peeling paint, soft wood, dark staining, or a gutter pulling away from the roof edge, the issue may be more than a loose fastener. Water may already have affected the fascia or roof edge. A professional assessment can determine whether the repair is limited to the gutter or involves adjacent roofing and trim.

Match your maintenance schedule to your property

A twice-yearly schedule is a starting point, not a rule for every home. Homes under tall firs often need gutter checks after periods of heavy needle drop and following windstorms. A newer home with open exposure may need less frequent cleaning, but it should still receive a spring and fall inspection.

Roof material also affects what appears in the gutter. Asphalt shingles naturally shed a small amount of granules over time, especially as they age. A sudden increase in granules, however, is worth noting. It may indicate shingle wear and is a good reason to have the roof evaluated along with the gutter system.

Moss is another local concern. Do not aggressively scrape moss from the roof into the gutter, where it can form thick blockages. Roof cleaning should be done using methods appropriate for the roofing material. High-pressure washing can damage many residential roofing systems and should not be used as a shortcut.

Cleaning is a homeowner task for some properties, but repair and replacement call for experienced judgment.
